The act of "sacking the rook" is a legitimate and often brilliant chess tactic known as a "rook sacrifice" or, more specifically, an "exchange sacrifice"

The Rook Sacrifice in Chess
Definition: A sacrifice in chess is when a player intentionally gives up material (like a rook) for something of lesser value or nothing in return for a superior position, a powerful attack, or a forced checkmate.
The Exchange: Sacrificing a rook (valued at approximately 5 points) for a minor piece (a bishop or knight, each valued at approximately 3 points) is called "losing the exchange" or an "exchange sacrifice".
Purpose: The goal is to achieve an advantage that outweighs the material loss. This might includeirect attack: Opening lines or clearing a diagonal for an attack on the opponent's king, often leading to a forced checkmate.
Positional advantage: Improving the activity of other pieces or creating weaknesses in the opponent's pawn structure.
Material gain: Forcing a sequence of moves that ultimately wins back the material, or even more, in the long run.

Common Usage in the Chess Community
In the chess community, the phrase "sacrifice the rook" has become a popular, almost meme-like expression, especially online in forums and on platforms like YouTube. Chess content creators like International Master Eric Rosen have popularized the phrase "You sacrifice, THE ROOOOOOOOOOOKKK!!!!" in a playful manner when a brilliant, game-winning sacrifice is possible.
While it's used as an exciting moment in content, it always refers to a sound, high-level tactical or strategic decision, not a casual or amateurish move. Players spend time studying famous rook sacrifices from masters like Bronstein and Lasker to understand these complex ideas and incorporate them into their own games.
