Lights, Camera, Chess Positions
Chess is now more popular than ever. It's popping up almost everywhere! In books, buildings, ads, and of course, on TV.
In this blog, I will be analyzing chess positions in movies and in TV shows. I like chess and I love movies, so this is the perfect blog topic for me.
The first show I will be analyzing today is the Disney channel show Jessie. In Season 2 Episode 17, Zuri Ross becomes a chess prodigy. The first move we see is that the French master is in check and it's Zuri's turn. But like I just said, he's in check and yet Zuri makes a pawn move that is illegal: she takes a his piece by going forward... with the pawn... huh? So then the French master takes her bishop with his pawn. Then Zuri plays yet another illegal move and moves the pawn forward and it puts her own king in check... uh... can we get a director for this show that ACTUALLY PLAYS CHESS?
Moving right along, the next position I will be analyzing today is from the Disney film Aladdin. If you have ever seen the Disney / Pixar short film Geri's Game, Almost all the moves played were legal! It was amazing. But, in this film Aladdin, we see a game of chess with The Genie and The Magic Carpet played. The scene starts with something VERY, VERY, unusual: The carpet DOES NOT HAVE A KING, then somehow TAKES the Genie's king with an illegal move from the queen. uhh...
The third position I'm analyzing is from the movie Tangled. She's playing against her chameleon and the king takes a rook that is protected by a bishop, literally MOVING INTO CHECK. Uhhh...
My fourth and final position is from Star Wars: A New Hope. They play what looks like Chess but isn't. It's called dejarik? Just.............................................. No.
That concludes this blog! I hope you enjoyed it! See you next week!
