How to Deal With Time in Your Games - And Take Advantage of it

Hello, this time I'm going to talk about something a little bit different than what I usually write about - openings. So I did some research and found out that when you're playing blitz or bullet, especially. Most of my wins and losses were on time. Why? This is because chess is a game about taking your time, thinking and planning ahead. But then blitz and bullet came out - which was a huge impact on chess and its future. How you may ask, well let me explain this in simple terms. Lets look at a bullet game, compared to a rapid game to demonstrate.

They resigned. See how early they blundered their queen? That's what happens when you don't think out your moves, and in some cases - that might be you. Look how different rapid can be:

More thinking was involved, and less blunders were made early on. My opponent didn't know that endgame, but don't make fun of them though : )

Now that that's over with, lets get down to the point.

Want to know a trick I use to win when both players are low on time? First, you make a complex position, preferably one that you're good at handling but the opponent may not be. Then you give lots of checks, or forks if you can (duh). It might make the opponent think for a while, giving you time.

But what should I do when only I am the one who has low time? Play fast, you're going to lose on time anyway, so might as well end it quickly; or maybe if you're lucky your opponent will take too long to think and run out of time themselves.

Then what do I do if only the opponent is low on time? You're almost guaranteed a win at that point, even if you have a losing position. But to increase your chances, I suggest you play complex moves so they lose faster lol. Or you can take extra time to think yourself, (but watch your time so you don't lose).

That's about it, I hope this helps any blitz/bullet players out there! Peace!

Author's notes: I know I haven't posted in a while because of school, but I'll try to get at least 2 - 3 blogs out each month. If you're wondering why all of the pictures I draw for my thumbnails are anime style, it's because sadly that's my art style. And lots of people like it so it'll get younger people interested in my blogs, and hopefully chess!
