Playing over-the-board Tournaments is harder than it looks

I’d almost forgotten what it feels like to sit across from a real opponent, the sound of clocks ticking, pieces clicking, and the quiet tension filling the room. It’s so different from playing online.

In an OTB tournament, you don’t get to play in your pajamas with a cup of tea next to you. You have to travel, sit under bright lights, and keep your focus for hours, surrounded by dozens of other players doing the same. It’s intense.

My biggest challenge? Nerves. Online, if I blunder, I can just close the tab and walk away. But over the board, every move feels so much heavier, there’s nowhere to hide. You can feel your opponent staring at the position, waiting for you to slip.

Still, there’s something special about OTB chess. The handshake before the first move, the feeling when you spot a tactic on the board, the quiet satisfaction of writing your move down, it all makes chess feel more alive.

I didn’t have the best result this weekend, but I learned a lot about staying calm and managing my time. And honestly, that’s a win in itself.
