Ruy López or Spanish Opening + Variations

The Spanish Opening, one of the most famous and ancient chess tactic, created by Ruy López (there the name). It has been analysed by experts again and again, complicated variations for all type of defences.

0. Base

An aggressive opening attacking in the first three moves a knight with the king's bishop. It is very famous, but because of all it's variations, difficulties when learning and possible defences, it isn't a good opening for beginners.

1. Exchange Variation:

1. e4 e5

2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Bb5 a6

4. Bxc6

By capturing the knight on c6 with the bishop, white aims to double black's pawns on the c-file, which can create long-term weaknesses and provide targets for future attacks. Additionally, exchanging the dark-squared bishop weakens white's control over the dark squares, potentially allowing black's remaining pieces to get a great advantage over these weaknesses.

2. Closed Ruy Lopez:

1. e4 e5

2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Bb5 a6

4. Ba4 Nf6

5. O-O Be7

Both sides continue with natural developing moves, aiming to control the center and complete their development. Castling kingside ensures the safety of the king while preparing for potential pawn breaks or piece maneuvers in the center or in the wings.

3. Berlin Defense:

1. e4 e5

2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Bb5 Nf6

4. O-O Nxe4

White sacrifices a pawn early on to disrupt black's central control and create imbalances. By capturing on e4 with the knight, white aims to challenge black's center and open lines for piece activity, with potential tactical opportunities arising from the unguarded e4-pawn or the vulnerability of black's kingside.
