Donald Byrne VS Bobby Fischer (1956)
Game of the century
Donald Byrne (White,26 y.o.) VS Bobby Fischer (Black,13y.o.)
Donald started with 1.Nf3, Réti opening. But already on the 8th move it transformed to the Grünfeld defense. It's a very complicated defense even for advanced players. First and the only blunder of this game has been made by Donald Byrne,11.Bg5 is a blunder,Which ignores a chance to get a piece off of its starting square(bf1=>be2). It already gave almost -3 points of advantage to young Bobby. After that,Fischer found the only brilliant move, that kept his advantage. 11.Na4 was a brilliant move made by Bobby. On the 13th move,he ate the pawn on e4.However,by that he opened Donald's bishop. Bobby decided to sacrifice his rook by being forked on the e7 squere. However,Byrne declined the rook offer. But on the next move,Fischer does another brilliant tactical move 15.Nxe3, Bobby sacrificed another piece to Donald! But Donald doesn't accept it either! As If he accepts,he would get worse position with lots of threats! But Fischer didn't go back! 17.Be6 made by Bobby was the third brilliant move made by him and the third piece sacrifice! He decided to sacrifice his queen. This time,Donald couldn't decline that kind of tasty gift! So he took Bobby's queen. By that mind blowing queen sacrifice,Bobby fully opened Donald's king .Fischer had a huge attack on the poor white's king. On the 33th move, even though Bobby didnt have queen,he had rook and 2 bishops for one Queen. Fischer had huge advantage of 10 points. Bobby Fischer used everyone to mate white's king! Rook, two bishops and knight were just killing Donald's king. So Fischer with 4 pieces mated Donald Byrne and claimed win in 41 moves.
