How to play Cheese Chess: The Ultimate Chess Variant for Cheese Lovers
Introduction
Cheese Chess is a chess variant with three new pieces, two new ways to win, and a wildly different strategy than classic chess. It is played on a 9x9 board, which is sometimes yellow and orange to keep the cheese theme going.
Alternative Winning Methods
Aside from checkmate, there are two new ways to win: either by eating the cheese with your mouse or by catching your opponent's mouse with your cat. (More about these new pieces later.)
New Pieces
The cheese 🧀 is placed on the center space at the start of the game. It can be moved by either player, and it moves one square in any direction. The cheese can only be captured by the mouse, called "eating the cheese", which results in a victory for the owner of the mouse. When the cheese is moved, your opponent cannot immediately move it back to the square it previously occupied. The cheese cannot capture.
The mouse 🐭 is a piece that starts on the right side of either player's King. It can move one space horizontally or vertically. It is the only piece that can capture the cheese, cannot capture any other piece, and can only be captured by the cat, called "catching the mouse", which results in a victory for the owner of the cat.
The cat 🐱 starts on the left side of either player's king. It can move up to two squares diagonally or one square vertically or horizontally. It is the only piece that can capture the mouse, and cannot capture any other piece.
Other Gameplay Changes
As the board is 9 squares wide, each player has 9 pawns.
To make space for the other pieces, the queen has been removed.
Everything else is as normal.
