Happy Birthday Dimitrios Mastrovasilis
We have three Grandmasters who were born "Today in Chess History:"
- Dimitrios Mastrovasilis of Greece born 1983, GM 2004.
- Daniel Forcén Esteban of Spain, born 1994, GM 2016.
- Denis Kadrić of Bosnia and Herzegovina, born 1995, GM 2015.
Dimitrios Mastrovasilis took the silver medal in the under 18 division at the European Youth Chess
Championships of 2000. In 2003 Mastrovasilis won the 1st Mediterranean Junior Championship in Ajelat, Libya. The following year he tied for 1st at Topola. In 2012 he won the Artemis Cup in Leros. He tied for first in the Francophone International in Paris last year (2019).
In team events, Mastrovasilis represented Greece in the Chess Olympiad, the World Team Chess Championship and the European Team Chess Championship. In 2016, he was part of team Europe, which defeated team Poland in the 8th Lublin Union Memorial.
Dimitrios has a brother who is also a chess Grandmaster, Athanasios Mastrovasilis. Dimitrios became a Grandmaster aged 20, in 2003 after winning the last four rounds at the European Individual Championship in Silivri, Turkey. Athanasios became a grandmaster two years later at the age of 26. Interestingly, the two have contrasting playing styles. While Athansios prefers solid, positional play, Dimitrios is an aggressive player.
I wanted to feature a victory by Dimitrios over Nigel Short, but due to technical difficulties, I am unable to provide the featured game here in the blog, however you can get it (including my commentary) from my archive at:
