Sergio Barrientos Chavarriaga (born June 29, 1986 in Medellín), is a Colombian chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2011. I want to show a couple of the games he won on his road to that title.

Barrientos has participated, representing Colombia, in five chess Olympics between 2004 and 2012, with a result of (+26 = 13 –15), for 60.2% of the score. His best result was in the 2010 Olympics when he scored 8½ out of 11 (+6 = 5 -0), with 77.3% of the score, with a performance of 2589. The Following game is from the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy. In that event he scored 6½ out of 11.

The next game was played at the 4th Continental Open at Cali, Columbia. Barrientos scored 6½ out of 11.

Barrientos is the two-time champion of Columbia. The national championship was held at Pereira in 2011 and ran from September 23rd to the 30th. The time control was 90 minutes with a 30 second increment. Barrientos scored 8 out of 11 with 7 wins two draws and two losses.

Even more impressive was his 2020 Championship win.  The event was held in Fusagasuga from December 1 to December 8. It was 12-player round-robin tournament with the time control of 90 min /40 moves + 30 min/end +30-sec increment starting from the first move.

Sergio Barrientos took the open section by storm scoring 9½ points out of 11. The Medellin-born GM conceded just three draws to his opponents winning eight games.
