After the formation of the USSR the USSR Chess Championship was established as the national championship. However the Russian championship continued to exist as the championship of the RSFSR. The first two USSR championships in 1920 and 1923 were also recognized as RSFSR championships; the modern numbering of Russian championships begins with the1920 & 23 tournaments.


Today's Daily Puzzle came from the 17th iteration of the event which was held at Krasnodar in May 1957. The city stands on the Kuban River in southern Russia, about 100 miles north and slightly west of Sochi.

Rashid Nezhmetdinov (December 15, 1912 – June 3, 1974) was a Soviet chess player, chess writer,
and checkers player. Although he never attained the title of Grandmaster, he was a renowned tactician and created several brilliant games. He missed becoming a grandmaster by a mere half point. Nezhmetdinov won this event five times. 1950, 51, 53, 57, 58.

His opponent was Yuri Kotkov (born May-31-1930, died 1998, 68 years old) was awarded the master title in 1955 and the IMC title in 1992. He was the author of the book Middlegame: The Defense Triumphs.
