In an evening that was absolutely electric, Velammal Nexus felicitated their student Gukesh for his phenomenal achievements - the most notable one being winning the Candidates 2024 and becoming a World Championship Challenger. Gukesh was gifted a car by his school and guess which car it was - an E class Mercedes Benz! Thousands of students cheered in Velammal Vidyalaya at their Mel Ayanambakkam campus in Chennai, as the programme included laser show, drone show, eclectic dances and much more. Gukesh was in a wonderful mood as he answered questions of all the students and gave an inspiring speech. He also made a very thoughtful gesture of donating Rs.10 lakh to the victims of Wayanad landslide. Gukesh, who has just turned 18 and is taking driving lessons right now, received the perfect gift of a car from the correspondent MVM Velmohan and Deputy Correspondent Sriram Velmohan. Speaking to ChessBase India about the gift of the Mercedes Benz, Gukesh says, "It's my first car and I am so thrilled about it. Velammal has supported my journey right from my initial days. In fact it is here that my chess journey began! I am very grateful to them for their support over the years and this wonderful gift." Gukesh is slated to leave for the USA on 16th of August 2024 for the Sinquefield cup. Next he will participate in the Chess Olympiad, before taking on Ding Liren at the World Championship Match in Singapore in November 2024.
