How to play Troll/Unorthodox Openings

Have you ever played an opponent who played an awful troll opening but still beat you?  Well I can show you how to turn the tables...

1.Be Aggressive

Troll openings usually lead to very sharp positions.  Chances are, your opponent isn't as familiar with these positions as they are with the main lines.  Often when you be aggressive and put pressure on your opponent in unfamiliar positions, they will make a mistake.  If you don't try to take the initiative, your opponent will positionally outplay you.

As you can see in this game I sacrificed an exchange for the initiative.  So...

1b.Don't be afraid to sac

Sometimes you have to forcibly open up the position to attack by sacrificing

2.Don't give up

This kind of applies to all games but especially ones with troll openings.  In these wacky positions your opponent can always miss something.

After 18...Qe7 it was +4.4, but just 7 moves later it was almost -2.

This next game shows both point 2 and point 3.  No annotations, this game was too crazy.

Just look at this graph!

3.Get up on time

Usually troll openings are played in short time control, as they are mostly a practical chance.  In slow time control you opponent will have enough time to figure out the best moves and beat you.  Your opponent will probably be surprised by your opening choice and will spend time trying to figure out a refutation.  This will serve to your advantage in those crazy middlegame positions and you can easily flag them in the endgame.

There's 30 seconds on your clock, can you find the one winning line?

In the game my opponent played 27...Qxe2+?? with an even position.  But the extra almost 1 minute I had was easily enough to flag him.

4.Do preparations
This is only for if you're very serious about winning these games.  Your opponent probably is only prepared for the main lines and you can destroy them with these unsound but very practical openings.

And finally...
5.Have fun happy.png
Have a good time confusing and triggering your opponents.
