California Showdown: A Week 5 Recap

A tough loss, but this was the closest match all season for the Los Angeles Vibe , as the San Francisco Mechanics slipped past with a score of 2.5-1.5. Although the Vibe were underdogs in this match, they played very well and were very close to either drawing or even winning the match. The only loss was dealt by FM Daniel Naroditsky over LA's FM Michael Casella, who blundered in time-pressure. FM Alexandre Kretchetov did not have too many problems holding against GM Patrick Wolff, FM Joel Banawa had an opening mishap and was forced to defend for the rest of the game as White against IM David Pruess, and FM Eugene Yanayt had missed a winning opportunity against NM Yian Liou, after which he was unable to play for the win.

 Here are the analyzed games:

Fun Fact
The Los Angeles Vibe have now used all of the players on their roster!

Kostya's Favorite Game
Winner: GM Dmitry Gurevich (CHC) vs IM Rogelio Barcenilla (ARZ)  1-0
I really liked this game a ton, as it was a very instructive win from the White side of a King's Indian.

The other awards have already been given out! Please read my new column for Chess Life Online that covers all of the league highlights: Week 5 Highlights

That's all for this week! The Vibe play the Manhattan Applesauce next!
