
A Sacrifice In The Polish Opening
Three weeks ago I played an almost blunder-less game. I made a small blunder in the end of the middle game and lost with a comfortable position. The game was comfortable and the sacrifice helped my position develop, so I decided to save the accidental sacrifice (made by a blunder) and play it. I played well with it. It required careful play, so I advice you not to play it unless you play really carefully. It started with the weirdly looking 1.b4, the Polish Opening. Then came e5 and e4. 1…, e5 opened the dark squared bishop for black, so then the bishop captured the b4 pawn. You can end here and develop…
…with a flexible position…or sacrifice further, like me. I played Ba3. The move doesn’t seem a good move for sacrificing, because the bishop is protected by the knight. The opponent also thought so and improved the opening, because if the knight would recapture, it would become unprotected:
So as the opponent moved the bishop to a5, my bishop moved to b4. The bishop was captured. Development will also work here:
