Third Circle Completed

For the third circle of my Seven Circles training I had to reduce the number of days from 16 to 14 in order to complete the training before December 3rd, because of a scheduling conflict.

For the first week I averaged 111 problems per day, taking about 2 hours per day. The second week I averaged 60 problems per day, taking about 2 1/2 hours per day. (Remember the problems are sorted by difficulty so I give myself more (easy) problems earlier in the circle.)

The circle went well until the final day. I was averaging only 2-3 errors per 60 problem set--pretty good for problems that were taking me several minutes each to solve. But on the final day I was mentally exhausted and I missed 19 problems out of the 62 I attempted that day. I simply couldn't concentrate enough to work out all the variations and made careless errors--even though these are all problems I've previously solved correctly or at least reviewed the answer to after failing.

On to circle four!

From 2012 to 2017 I pursued aggressive adult improvement (starting at age 43). I recorded my journey here as I gained over 400 rating points over two years, peaking at 1753 USCF in 2015. After taking a multi-year break to complete my doctorate, I returned to competitive chess in 2024.
