Bobby Fischer Memorial, Round 4: Struggling to find a plan in the Alekhine
Sep 23, 2015, 6:49 PM
If you're going to play offbeat openings like Alekhine's Defense, you don't have to know all the lines ten moves deep, but you should at least have some idea of how to play the positions that typically arise. This game illustrates what can happen when you come up with the wrong plan. Yes, I overlooked a mate at the end, but I had a bad position long before that.
It may sound strange, but making appalling blunders in consecutive games may have helped me settle down a bit and stop taking myself so seriously. My last round game (there were two rounds left in the tournament, but I had asked for a final-round bye) may have been my best.
