2-Knights vs. Pawn Mate

2-Knights vs. Pawn Mate

After practicing the basic mating patterns under Puzzles->Drills->Checkmates, I arrived at two that stumped me. The first one, bishop and knight vs. lone king, I have since perfected and utilized a few times in a game thanks to this video.

The second one, two knights vs. pawn, has continued to vex me even though I've solved it a couple of times thanks to good luck. Obviously, this may only happen once in a lifetime, but I'd still like to learn it out of stubbornness. If you want to get a feel for how difficult it is to pull off, crank up the engine and play as the defending side against the computer. I did so on this site and others, and held on to the draw via 50-move rule way more often than not.

The general idea of the mate is to stick one knight in front of the pawn, and use the other knight and king to push the opposing king to a corner it can't escape from. By releasing the pawn at the right time, the second knight can arrive in time to deliver mate (provided the pawn is blockaded early enough up the board, see the wiki).

Here is an example where I was able to get the mate in the drill:

The tricky thing for me is how to make progress when the king doesn't cooperate/when I have opposition and don't want to give tempos with my knights. All too often, my tries end up like this:

Maybe master games will give some guidance? Although it's exceedingly rare, I was able to find a couple instances where the mate occurred in a game. The most famous example is probably between former World Champion Anatoly Karpov and Veselin Topalov.

Another good one comes from former World Championship challenger Sergey Karjakin. Here the opponent helps out quite a bit. Agadmator put out a good video on the game here.

This game of Hans Niemann is the most instructive of the bunch for me, and the one where I most easily see the king and knight coordinating.

So what do you guys think? Any advice on how to better coordinate pieces like the masters shown above? Anyone ever get one in a game?

If interested, I also have a few more example games below.

Edit: Agadmator just put out a video showing Maghsoodloo defeating Harikrishna in a NN vs. P endame here
