Assimilation

The full moon shines upon the ground,

covers up the glimmer of the bound sun;

presents itself as the new norm.

I have prayed and prayed long and hard.

I have shied from the crowd,

slunk away from the sun and hid at home.

I come out at night to feed and free myself,

But I hunt no one, I kill no body, I’m innocent.

I’m hollow, every part of me is blank;

I’m hungry, and I’m full of hate.

You can’t take that from me because that is me.

Aye, I worship the devil--

Aye, I’m not your average religious person--

I am what I am; I can’t change that and I wouldn’t.

Let me be, let me hide, don’t touch me,

Don’t burn me, don’t chain me--

Don’t condemn me, it’s not worth it,

Don’t lock me up, I don’t want to be.

I’m a piece of glass, clear and transparent,

Thin and fragile, shiny and unsullied.

I’m a knife, sharp on one edge and blunt on the other,

Highly dangerous but not if you don’t touch me.

I’m a sword of graphene, stronger than diamond,

Harder than concrete and I can’t be broken.

I have feelings and emotions, 

Blood and body and bones.

I’m unique, there’s no doppelgänger,

I’m not sneaky, I’m not a mimicker,

Treat me like you treat your fellow comrades.

Don’t leave me to bite the dust,

Don’t dump me in the ditch;

Help me up and arm me, 

so that I can protect myself and aid you.
