The one opponent you bring into every game

Somewhere inside your brain, there’s still a caveman trying to protect you from danger. The problem is that now he thinks losing rating points is a life-threatening situation.
When your body detects stress, it releases cortisol and other stress hormones which is great if you’re escaping danger but not so great when you’re trying to calculate a rook endgame online at midnight.
You become impatient, you rush moves, time pressure suddenly feels catastrophic, and one bad move can feel like your entire rating is collapsing in real time. If you play online, you definitely know the feeling.
The thing is, under pressure your brain starts caring more about escaping the discomfort than finding the best move. That’s why after a mistake many players suddenly start moving too fast, forcing random attacks or trying to repair the position instantly. Not because they forgot chess… but because stress changes the way we react under pressure.

And this doesn’t only happen in chess. Tennis players rush points, basketball players force bad shots and football players make impulsive decisions under pressure all the time. The tricky part is that stress disguises itself as urgency. You suddenly feel like you need to move immediately or win your rating back right now, while your nervous system never actually gets a chance to calm down.

What can you actually do? Here are a few small things that can help:

  • Before you play, try not to jump directly from work, stress or social media into a game. Even a few quiet minutes can make a difference
  • During tense moments, try slowing down your exhale. Even one slower breath can calm your system more than you think.
  • If you had a rough day or slept badly, maybe don’t force long rated sessions that night. Your brain is probably already overloaded.
  • And after a frustrating loss, don’t instantly queue again just because your emotions want revenge points. That usually ends exactly how you expect

Because chess isn’t just calculation, it’s also biology. And unfortunately, your nervous system sometimes treats a rook endgame like a life-or-death situation

Enjoy playing!
