Your brain is tired, not your strategy

If your decisions get worse during a game, it’s easy to think you’re making mistakes. But many times, it’s not about your skill. Your brain is just tired.

Let’s be honest- we’ve all been there. At the beginning of a match, you feel sharp, focused, and in control. You calculate better, you spot opportunities faster. Everything just clicks.

But as time goes on, something shifts. You start missing obvious moves, you rush decisions, and your thinking gets blurry. Suddenly, it feels like you’re playing worse than ever.
But don’t despair- this isn’t random. What’s actually happening is simple: your brain is running low on usable energy. Your decision-making depends on more than just knowledge or experience.
It depends on whether your brain has the energy to use that knowledge effectively. When your energy drops, your thinking drops with it. And this usually happens when:

  • you haven’t eaten in a way that keeps your energy stable
  • you’ve been focusing for too long without a break
  • your body is under stress (even if you don’t notice it)

So instead of asking, “Why am I playing worse?”, try asking: “What’s happening with my energy right now?”. Because before improving your strategy, you need to support the system that makes good decisions possible.
If you need help, here are some quick reset ideas during a game:

  • Take 3 slow breaths to reset your focus
  • Drink water
  • Slow your pace down on purpose for a few moves
  • If possible, take a short break

Your level didn’t disappear. Your brain just needs support to perform at its best. Enjoy playing!
