The opening is the first phase of the game. There are more than 1000 chess openings, but here I will introduce into only five.

1. The Italian Game

The Italian Game is one of the most famous chess opening and is a good opening for beginners. Here are the moves.

After 3..Bc4 black has two main options : Black can either play Nf6 or Bc5. Nf6 is called 'The Two Knights Defense' and Bc5 is called 'The Giuoco Piano'. White can continue the game with d3, Nc3 and Castle.

2. The Ruy Lopez

The Ruy Lopez is famous and is a bit similar to the Italian Game but this time, instead of having a bishop on c4, the bishop is on b5.

White's bishop is attacking black's knight , the key defender of the e5 pawn. Black's best choice is a6., attacking the white bishop. You might think that white can be pawn up, but no. Here is what will happen if white captures the knight and then the e5 pawn.

Therefore, white must play Ba4. It will continue as an equal game.

3. The Queens Gambit

This is going to be the first d4 opening we're going to explore today. You might be wondering what a gambit is. A gambit is an opening where we sacrifice material ( Mostly a pawn or two) to get an equal positional advantage. The Queens Gambit is a good opening for beginners.

Black has two choices. He can take it or defend it with another pawn. It is best to decline the Queens Gambit as white will have a good center and development. If black accepts it, the position will be better for white. Like this :

White has a good position if black accepts it so we have to decline it with e6 or c6

4. The Sicilian Defense

The Sicilian defense is a good opening for Black and it is one of the most common responses to e4.

The Sicilian controls the square d4. After c5 one of the most common response is Nf3. The game will then continue in an equal position, like this.

5. The French Defense

The French defense is another popular opening for black. After e4 black plays e6, threatening to play d5 on the next turn, Like this.

After this position white has a few options. White can play exd5, e5, Nc3 or even Nd2. It will be an equal game.

Those are five of the most famous chess openings. There are loads more but I can't introduce all of them.
