PHILIDOR BONANZA : THE BEGINNING
Good Morning masters !!..are you bored playing 2..Nc6 from black side or want to try something different. Then may be PHILIDOR'S DEFENCE is your cup of tea!. A classical, positional and complicated repertoire to e4.
INTRODUCTION
In philidor Defence Black defends the e5 pawn by 2..d6 , black opens all the options for Queen's Knight. A obvious drawback to this is that King's bishop won't be developing to active squares like c5 or b4 immediately, and later on passivity of this piece can become an issue.
But still it's a SOLID opening with lots of counterplay chances for black after the opening gets completed. There are many interesting variations in this opening which both sides can play.
OPENING VARIATIONS AND LINES
White plays d4
1.PHILIDOR COUNTER GAMBIT
This is very risky and unclear line to play from Black side as if White plays precisely he can corpse Black's play and structure but that needs a good preparation. This can get you advantage below mastery level. Even strong GM's have given some negative comments on it but still some players play it regularly. There are lots of move orders and ways to proceed the game.
(A) 4.exf5 (Refuting counter gambit)
(B) Accepting the counter gambit
2.HANHAM VARIATION
In this variation Black's main aim will be to avoid losing, whereas with other move order Black can get a playable position. Even though the main line of Hanham is quite difficult for both sides, but an error by black has more serious consequences.
NOTE: Black may start with 1.d6 which changes just move order but intentions are same .
So here after white has several ways to advance.
(A). 6.Bxf7+
(B). 6.dxe5
(C). 6.Ng5
(D). 6.0-0
3.LARSEN VARIATION
The Kingside Fianchetto initiates Larsen's system, which is outwardly attractive-Black gets potential for action along e-file - but in real world turns out to be probably too slow.
4.ANTOSHIN VARIATION
The most common Black response to d4 is 3...exd4 which relieves the central tension, although it gives up the centre. This is the key line in Antoshin variation.
.Further white has a number of options to advance the game and black has to give most suitable reply to it.There are four main lines in this variation:-
(A) 6.Bc4
(B) 6.Bf4

SUMMARY
Philidor is very deep and needs great patience as the centre always remains in tension and black has to withstand more blunder prone zone. In order to fight blunders, find the right plan in complex positions and improve your positional and tactical vision. Also I will suggest to play more and more open games first before handling philidor.
