OPENING REPERTOIRE
What I would really like to use this blog for is to chart my own progress in the game of chess, and if it ends up being of some use to others then all the better. As this is me just starting out, then we ought to begin somewhere and there is no better place than the beginning. In this first post, then, we will consider the opening move.
Chess is not a simple game, but we will try to keep things nice and simple here. There are lots of opening moves for white and for black, and so there is a temptation to learn as many of these as we can - thus becoming a jack of all trades and a master of none. I'm going to simplify this by focusing on one opening for white and two for black.
Why one for white and two for black? Well, as white we get to decide the very first move of the game. This gives us the opportunity to pick one opening, stick to it, and repeat it and study it until we have some measure of mastery over it. My personal favourite is e4. When we play black we are most likely going to be faced with either e4 or d4, so we need to start thinking about good responses to each of these.
So, without further ado, here is my opening repertoire: When playing white I will open with e4 and concentrate on how to deepen my understanding of the e4 game, when playing black against the e4 opening I will play c6 (the Caro-Kann) and against d4 I will play d5 and work into the Semi-Slav. Now, let's see where this gets us.
