Chess player of the day

Garry Kasparov

Chess master

Attackers may sometimes regret bad moves, but it is much worse to forever regret an opportunity you allowed to pass you by.

Today we celebrate Garry's birthday! 🥳

Sharp, aggressive, and terrifyingly precise, Garry Kasparov is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time. The 13th World Champion dominated the game for over a decade, combining deep preparation with explosive attacking play. Beyond the board, he has built a reputation as a political activist, author, and outspoken critic of the Russian government—living a life every bit as intense as his games.

Kasparov’s influence stretches far beyond competition. He is a prolific writer, with works ranging from the political Winter is Coming to the instructive How Life Imitates Chess. He has also served as chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, further cementing his global impact outside of chess.

Playing Style

Kasparov at his peak was the ultimate attacking machine. No king was ever truly safe, no weakness ever insignificant. His dynamic style overwhelmed even the strongest opponents, forcing them into defensive battles they were rarely equipped to survive.

His legendary rivalry with Anatoly Karpov defined an era. Where Karpov was precise and positional, Kasparov brought fire and complexity—creating a clash of styles that produced some of the greatest games in chess history.

Kasparov’s preparation, energy, and relentless will to win made him one of the most feared competitors the game has ever seen.
