Chess player of the day

Ian Nepomniachtchi

Chess master

Being lazy... That's my superpower.

Ian Nepomniachtchi—often called “Nepo”—is one of the most dynamic players in modern chess. A long-time elite grandmaster, he has firmly established himself among the very best in the world and even challenged Magnus Carlsen for the world title. While that match didn’t go his way, it doesn’t diminish his reputation as one of the most dangerous and exciting players on the circuit.

Born in Russia, Nepomniachtchi learned chess at the remarkably young age of four and a half and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. Known for his relaxed and sometimes humorous attitude, he stands out in a field often defined by intense seriousness. Outside chess, he has also reached a high level in competitive gaming, particularly in Defense of the Ancients, and is known to enjoy games like Hearthstone in his free time.

Playing Style

Nepomniachtchi thrives in complex and dynamic positions. While he is a complete player capable of handling any type of game, he clearly prefers sharp, unclear battles where intuition and speed play a major role. He excels at putting pressure on opponents and steering games into territory that is difficult to navigate. His style has often drawn comparisons to Mikhail Tal, thanks to his willingness to embrace chaos and find creative solutions over the board.
