Random Thoughts

So, when I have some time, I have already streamed on the day, cannot really play since I had already my share of beer in the afternoon and had two puzzle rush survival sessions where I performed less than 20... I will share some thoughts here! What else?

So, the best thing is checking the notebook where I jot down thoughts and notes while I play, and try to recollect something.

I had a great post mortem some days ago, I can only recommend to talk about the game with somebody else, about your thoughts and similar. It does not matter if you cannot analyze, talking about your game, explaining why you chose something or what puzzled you about a move of your opponent will make you see things better and grow your understanding of the game and your vision.

I think I am starting to understand a little tiny bit how to move pawns. The thing is that when I advance one too much I get too emotional and want to defend it even when it has no attackers and I should leave it on its own only for one single move. grin.png It's like my little baby and I have to protect it at any cost!

I said I have to train pins, and I am doing it regularly. Is it helping? I cannot indeed tell, I am not sure I see them that better, but it's only a few day that I am focussing with it. There are more tactics I want to train with, which requires very few calculation (at least, the easy versions), like discovered attacks/checks, remove the defender and trapped pieces. There are more easy tactics I could improve a bit, like forks, skewer and hanging pieces, yet I think I am better at them than the previous ones. How much time would I need to indeed see better pins? Why knowing the theory does not help when a piece is pinned? Why is it so difficult to see it? Why is my board vision so crap?

Fun. Chess must be fun. I have been talking about it with one of my chess buddies here on chess.com. He would like to talk about the funny aspects of chess, everybody is too serious around here. Am I also serious in my blogs? Yes, definitely. I live chess as a funny, interesting and engaging thing, but does it really show in my words? Or in my streaming? I do what I have to do, but also try to add some fun in the mix. A new opening, a new program, a stream, a blog, a video. I do my best to be an active part, and share my thoughts, interact with people, ask for help, you name it.
Written as I am writing it, it does not sound so much fun. I will keep this thought in the back of my mind, to spice everything up every now and then.

I also wanted to make a post about my progress. It is 7 months I do chess, I could compare some of the statistics month by month... ehm, that does not sound so fun. Aren't charts fun? To some extent, I would say so. Less fun when you try to figure out how open office works. In the end, I improved. Is there any other statistics from insights you would consider useful for such a chart? Any that would give me some hints on where to focus?

Last but not least some thoughts from the last analysis.

  • it is usually better to take hanging pieces straight away, even when there are some checks around (unless it is a mate around)
  • it is very hard to play solidly when in disadvantage; very often there are less decent candidate moves and they are difficult to find, while when on advantage many moves are more than good enough
  • I have quite some tunnel vision. I follow my plan, often a bizarre one, and don't see pins, forks, whatever, if they affect another part of the board. Maybe even when they are close to what I consider the current spot where the action is taking place

Can I link the lichess study with my 900 ELO games?

Too tired to review the text, I will edit it later if needed. Enjoy your Sunday!

Talking about my progress, my small victories, my weaknesses, and what I do in general. This is a kind of diary where I discuss some chess related topics, depending on what I did over the last days.

I am a beginner (1000 ELO in September 2022), I think this blog could be interesting for people around my level that share my struggles and can learn from them, for people a little lower to find a bit of inspiration, and for people at an higher level because chess lovers are eager to teach chess to anybody who caught the chess bug!
