What it is? This is a pawn that, on the way to promotion, cannot be blocked by an opponent's pawn, nor can it be captured. In many positions it is much more valuable than a bishop, knight, or even a rook. This means that a passed pawn can decide the outcome of the game if it moves at the right time. Hence our rule:
It is important to create a passed pawn!

Experienced players think about this in advance, so that later at a decisive moment, usually in the endgame, they can gain an advantage with the help of a passed pawn.

"How can I do it?" Is there a secret in this?" - many will ask. You can't say that there is one. It's just very important to remember how dangerous such a pawn can be. But sometimes you can use one trick. happy.png

For generations of teachers, they show their students the following position and ask: "Can White create a passed pawn here?"
Take a look:

The kings stand far apart, each in his own corner. If the white king ran to the middle of the board, black would be there just as quickly. So White needs to come up with something else. Suppose white moves:

1.cxb6 2. a6! A sacrifice for the sake of the pawn on c5, in order to clear the way for the pawn, in other words, to become a passed pawn. 2... bxa6 (There was no other choice, otherwise White would have captured the pawn on his next move.) 3.c6

This distant passed pawn, as it is called, can easily be promoted to a queen. Two pawns sacrificed themselves to make way for the third. Let's consider one more variant, if black on the first move beat 1...axb6. Then white simply moves c6, black is forced to capture again, and then the pawn that is on the a-file passes.

And again a distant passed pawn appears, which becomes a queen in two moves.

Always look for an opportunity to create a passed pawn so that it can pass unhindered, and you can get yourself a new queen.
The closer a passed pawn approaches the promotion square, the more dangerous and valuable it becomes.
