August, Gamer Month: What unites gamers and chess players? 🎮♟️

Dear friends! Today starts the beginning of "Gamer Month." We've been celebrating this month for two years, and since 2008, it's been celebrated worldwide on August 29th.
By exploring the connection between gaming and chess, we see that both worlds share strategy, competition, and community, even though one dominates the screens and the other, the boards.

We analyze the gaming market in the following ways: evolution, number of users, player characteristics and competitiveness.

Evolution - From the arcade to the metaverse, chess has been the "first Esport", influencing games like StarCraft, World of Warcraft (this one and Doom my dad really likes), Valorant and League of Legends.
Registered users +150 million (Chess.com) League of Legends: 180M/month
Monthly active players ~30-50 million Fortnite: ~230M/month
Player characteristics - Streamers - Hikaru and GothamChess are as popular in their community as gaming icons PewDiePie and Ninja.
Competitiveness (eSports): Hybrid tournaments like PogChamps combine both communities. In 2025, chess debuted at the Esports World Cup.

Trends for the next 5 years: Remakes & Reboots - Strengthening classic franchises with commercial success and Artificial Intelligence - More realistic NPCs and more sophisticated generative content.
