Carlsbad Formation is one of the most common pawn structures that appears in the Queen's Gambit and the Caro-Kann Defense. The name comes from the town where very strong and famous chess tournaments were played around 100 years ago and that structure happened in many games. Also very well know is a plan that is closely connected to that - minority attack. Take a look at the diagrams below:

Queens Gambit version (above), white pushes the b-pawn and attack the c6,
black pushes the f-pawn attacking the e3

Caro-Kann version(above), white pushes the f-pawn and attack the e6,
black pushes the b-pawn attacking the c3
