Puzzles
Hey everyone, I am doing this blog without my assistant as he is doing other blogs without me, we both will do blogs together after this one and Tim's. There are many puzzles on chess.com. I love puzzles that are ones like this one:
I know there can be 2 ways to mate, but my explanation here is that I like to solve puzzles that have a back rank mate. One easy way to solve these kinds of puzzles is to look for checks and captures, If you don't have a setup like that, look for forks, because sometimes this might happen:
Yeah, that might be some real chess, but that is what you need to keep an eye on 👀
If you don't know what forks are, here are some examples:
In this position, the knight jumps to the center and forks all of the pieces, since it is a check, the knight can win the most powerful and the 2nd most valuable piece, The queen. A fork is a tactic in chess when you attack multiple pieces at once, it can be with or without a check.
A fork with a check:
In this position, the bishop gives a check to the black king and captures the rook. The king was forced to move because he is in check, when the helpless king moves, the bishop takes the rook and says "ha ha"
A fork without a check:
This is the fried liver attack, but still, it is a fork and the fork is without a check, the queen had to move because it is a more valuable piece than the rook, then the knight captures the rook and wins 5 points, unless white finds a way to help black.
Back to my explanation.
Our next stop is the battery.
Most of you might know this, but the battery is a tactic when two pieces team up to create more energy, For example:
In this position, the queen attacks the king with fierce confidence, the king is like "Wow, I can just capture you, lol" but then, the rook is like "Nah, I always protect my queen, if you even think about capturing her (which you even tried to) I will checkmate you (which the queen did)
The best way to solve puzzles that have the tactic "Battery" is to look for pieces that are the best teammates, then look for a checkmate, if a piece is being the defender, then remove it and checkmate the king. In this blog, I showed you how to solve 3 types of puzzles, but remember my advice, Look for checks, forcing moves, forks, skewers, checkmate or moves to get ina good position, if there is a defender trying to stop you from doing that, remove the defender.
