this fun course pushes u to think about the goals of the opponents opening, and make a plan to counter it. unlike the other beginner courses ive taken, it does not give away the correct response. u can try different wrong moves and get feedback on how that does or doesnt accomplish the goal, and the hints are actual hints that give food for thought instead of giving it away.

this week my goal was just to be able to recognise what many different openings are called. i did not expect to remember any of the counters or to take much else away, but i ended up with a better understanding of chess strategy, and it was genuinely a fun time!

i ended up doing each lesson multiple times to see if i could think thru the problems better, and i will probly return to it again.

here r my pictures to organize the openings into related sets and help me remember the names

arrows showing that after d4 d5 nf3 nf6, the next move could be the indian game, colle system, london system, or torre attack

chess diagram showing that after e4 e5 nf3, the next move could include the gunderam gambit, elephant gambit, latvian gambit, or damiano defense.

first moves could include nimzo-larsen, van geet, van't kruijs, and reti which could turn into the kings indian.

pretty much every response to e4 is a named opening, but the course includes the owen's defense on b6

hello welcome to my blog, this is my personal chess journal but u can read it if u want
