FIDE Online Arena Titles: Official Online Chess Titles

FIDE Online Arena titles are a set of official online chess titles awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) through the FIDE Online Arena, the official FIDE internet chess server. These titles are created to recognize achievement and skill in online rated games and are meant to encourage players to continue improving and participating in competitive chess.

What the Titles Are

There are four Arena titles, ordered from lowest to highest online achievement:

  • Arena Candidate Master (ACM)

  • Arena FIDE Master (AFM)

  • Arena International Master (AIM)

  • Arena Grandmaster (AGM)

These titles mirror the naming structure of classical over-the-board (OTB) titles, but they are separate and earned exclusively through online play on the FIDE Online Arena platform. Unlike traditional OTB titles, Arena titles do not require performance norms or OTB tournament results.

How They Are Earned

To be eligible for an Arena title:

  1. A player must reach the required online rating for that title on FIDE Online Arena.

  2. They must then maintain that rating for a set number of games at or above the threshold in a specific time control.

  3. The titles can be earned in Rapid, Blitz, or Bullet time controls, each with a different minimum game count.

The current thresholds and game requirements are as follows:

Arena Title Minimum Rating Minimum Games at or Above Rating
ACM 1100 50 Rapid or 100 Blitz or 150 Bullet
AFM 1400 50 Rapid or 100 Blitz or 150 Bullet
AIM 1700 50 Rapid or 100 Blitz or 150 Bullet
AGM 2000 50 Rapid or 100 Blitz or 150 Bullet

Once the requirements are met, the title is automatically awarded and appears on the player’s FIDE profile. Players also receive an official FIDE certificate for their Arena title.

Official Recognition and Display

These online titles are officially recognized by FIDE and will be displayed on a player’s FIDE profile alongside their other ratings and information. However, they are distinct from the classical OTB titles and have separate regulations and requirements.

How Arena Titles Compare to Traditional Titles

Arena titles are intended for players in the lower rating band and reflect consistent performance in online play rather than the high competitive standards required for traditional OTB titles like Grandmaster (GM) or International Master (IM). For example:

  • Earning Arena Grandmaster (AGM) requires maintaining a rating of at least 2000 online.

  • In contrast, OTB GM typically requires a FIDE rating of 2500+ along with performance norms achieved in rated OTB events.

Because Arena titles are based on online activity, they are generally considered less prestigious than classical FIDE titles earned through in-person competition, though still official markers of online chess accomplishment.
