The back rank mate is almost impossible in the game of advanced players and higher ratings. But take a look at beginner's, sometimes low-rated player was not aware of a possible back rank mate. Anyways, in chess.com's beginner puzzle there are so many back rank mate puzzles.

Yes, that is an easy back rank mate. In the puzzle, black just moved the rook to d8 which allows a back rank mate. There is a famous game with a back rank mate combination by the 2005 world champion, Veselin Topalov. Can you find Topalov's move?

Ok, here I will give you the full game:

Andreas Moen has done a really bad blunder Qxh6 that's allow mate in two. The top engine, Stockfish recommend white to move Qg3 after Bh6, protecting the e1 square from back rank mate.

Usually, back rank mates are easy to spot, well maybe on fast time control it's harder to spot. If you don't want to get checkmated on the back rank, just move h-pawn or g-pawn to make a space for the king to move.

The other way to prevent back rank mates is to keep the rook defend the back rank, the move the h or g pawn if you want to attack with the rook.

Practice

Now i will give you puzzles of back rank mates for practice.

That's all my readers, I just hope you don't get checkmated with the back rank mate on your own games, just be more carefull, and look fo possible back rank mates.
