Who is the First Black Person To Ever Play chess?
Well Hello! How are you guys on this Fine evening/morning . Today I'm going to be talking about the First black person to EVER play chess . Now ACCORDING to Google (And my Grandmother) the First person to ever play chess was Maurice Ashley . Maurice Ashley was born on March 6 in 1966 and is At the age of 55 years old . He became The first ever jamaican chess grandmaster , author and commentator. In 1999 he earned the Grandmaster title (GM) making him the FIRST black person to attain the title .
Ashley is very well known as a commentator for a high-profile chess events . He also Spent Many Many years teaching chess . On April 13th 2016 , Ashley was inducted to the US Chess Hall of fame . He went into Brooklyn Technical High School , Ashley graduated from City College New York with a B.A in Creative Writing , while at city college , he represented the school in intercollegiate competition .
Maurice clearly stated that he learned chess in Jamaica where his brother played chess with his friends . He Continued to get more serious in chess during high school where he grew up in brownsville brooklyn and played in parks and clubs throughout New York City.
