Halloween 2025: "De-Spookify" Gambits

Hey Impressive Chessers!

Happy All Hallow's Eve, Eve (the day before Halloween)! Today we're going to be "de-spookifying" gambits just like we did last year:

If you haven't already, or you want to brush up on my strategy to deal with these tricky gambits, check out my 2024 "De-Spookifying" Gambits blog: https://www.chess.com/blog/NMChesstoImpress/de-spookify-gambits-by-declining-them

Every October, gambit enthusiasts come crawling out of the crypt, eager to scare you into giving up material or your sanity in the opening. But as you’ll see, there’s no need to panic. With a little "de-spookifying" knowledge, you can turn their haunted openings into free rating points.

1. Halloween Gambit

What is White Hoping For?

How did White punish Black for his/her greedy play?

2. Alien Gambit

What is White Hoping For?

Black tried to cling to his/her extra material and was punished for their greed, how?

My De-Spookifying line

Give back some material to reclaim the initiative back from your daring opponent!

How did Black punish White's 26. Qg6??

3. Garlic Gambit*

*Okay, it's actually called the Gibbins-Weidenhagen Gambit but don't be a fun vampire, use some tasty Garlic Festival garlic to ward off that side of you!
P.S. are you even having pasta if it has no garlic?!

What is White Hoping For?

Black clung to their extra material and never got to strike back. In fact White is about to land their final blow, can you find it?

My De-Spookifying line

Can you find Black's amazing resource in this position?

Conclusion

And there you have it, three gambits, three exorcisms.

The real takeaway? Gambit players thrive on fear. They count on you clinging to material like it’s your last lifeline, but as soon as you calmly return some of it, seize the initiative back, the aggressive "gambitteer" usually turns into a pumpkin!

So the next time someone lobs a spooky gambit your way, don’t run. Don’t panic. Just remember: you’re not the victim in a horror film, you’re the director. Decide the pace, control the tone, and let them be the one screaming at the board when their “brilliant” attack fades into ashes.

Thanks for joining me for another De-Spookifying session!
If you enjoyed this year’s ghost hunt, please do let me know in the comments. As well as if you have any suggestions for other gambits that need to be "de-spookified".

Until then...
…Stay impressive!
