Why do we choke on winning positions?
Hello. I’m back. I really just forgot about blogging and just play. Now I have the motivation again.
A common thing when we play is ‘choking’. What do I exactly mean? First we had to understand ‘choking’ first.
’Choking’ is when our body is when we swallow food but then one of them doesn’t come down as it does. In chess, its a little same but also, different. It usually happens when we had a winning position, up material, big attack, time. Then we play a silly move, blunder I should say. All the advantages is gone to zero or for the opponent, great. You starting to ask “Why does this happened? Why do I played this?...” The main thing is just why? You had everything, thus you gave it all away. This is what ‘choking’ in chess truly means.
Welp, we ourselves ‘choked’ many games before. It happens everyday to us and really it does hurt. The main thing is why though? I have made a list of what could have happened and you could share your own experiences down below. Lets start.
1. Time
Time is something really important in our chess games. It determines the fate of the game and when you had low time, anything could happen in a bad way.
Time trouble is when our clock usually drains almost zero (usually 1 minute), that time our nerve system will be loaded up, making ourselves panic and in that state, you will start blundering. This is a very common thing that happens to all players, not many of ourselves could stay calm and fight two things at one time, in cause of that we start losing.
2. Wrong calculations
Wrong calculations is also a cause of ‘choking’ the game. This happens when we didn’t really see the follow up of the move the opponent played, from that the nerve system started to rise again, making us nervous and played the wrong move. This causes us to waste time on the clock, plus losing or drawing our game, even though we know that we were winning.
3. Disruptions
Disruptions when we played the game is also common. When we played our move in the game online or offline, we usually get distracted from the game such as noises or sounds, sometimes we get distracted by other games. This causes our mind to get distracted, no longer calculating in the game makes us panic, from that we lost our game.
4. Tiredness, exhaustion and bad days
Alll these things above could really cause you to lose. When you got tiredness and exhaustion, your brain won’t be focused on the game, causing you to lose and lost motivation and rage so when you play again, you will have a big chance to lose, the rage will start rising, making you can’t stop playing and losing.
