Hello All,

Here is another Guess the Next Move type of game between the well known Morphy and Theodore Lichtenhein. Before I did this game I knew nothing of Theodore, so I did some quick research. This information is taken from Wikipedia (I know, I know, not a great source).

  • Theodore was born in East Prussia in 1829 and passed on May 1874 (he was only 45).
  • He moved to the US in 1851, and 1856 he joined the New York Chess club (since I live in NY, I have to do more research on him)
  • He served as a Major in the 58th Regiment on the New York Volunteers during the American Civil War (the war started in 1861 and ended in 1865)

I wanted to add a picture of Theodore, but the picture was too blurry and it drove me crazy.

Here is the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Lichtenhein

Here is the game. Theodore is white, Morphy is black and I am (you are) playing as Morphy. Par is 32, my score was 31.

Moves one through five are given:

1) e4, e5 2) Nf3, Nc6, 3) Bc4, Nf6 4) d4, exd4 5) e5, d5

6) My guess of ..Bd7 got zero points. The actual move was ..Ne4

7) Full credit (3 points) for my guess of ..Bc5. The actual move was ..Bd7

8) 3 points for my correct guess of ..bxc6

9) 3 points for my correct guess of ..Bc5

10) Full credit for my guess of ..dxc4. But, the actual move was ..Qh4

11) A correct guess of ..dxe4

12) I lost a point for my bad suggestion of ..Bb4. Morphy's move was ..Bg4

13) A correct guess of ..Bxe3

14) I lost another point with my suggestion of ..Qh3. Morphy's move was ..Qd8 (once I saw this move I recognized the beauty of it)

15) A correct guess of ..Qd1+

16) Another correct guess of ..Qf3+

17) Full credit for my suggestion of ..Qxe3. The actual move was ..Bh3

18) Full credit for my suggestion of ..Kd8. Morphy's move was in the opposite direction, ..Kf8

19) A correct guess with ..Ke7

Side Note:

Here are my current opponents, please feel free to reach out and give them a challenge:

AomExpert (aggressive play and naturally talented)

Mathiesh (my favorite player)

PL11US (She will be Queen one day)

BunsenBurner242 (my beloved nephew)

WizardAngelo (another natural talent who I keep pushing to get into tournaments)

Jake_Gem (Godlike when he plays OTB)

Enjoy!

Welcome to my quiet corner of Chess.com!

I have loved this game as a child but never had anyone who wanted to play. Playing against a computer is handy but it doesn't compare to the adrenaline rush of playing against another person.

I finally bit the bullet and joined this website to learn tactics (I need lots of help with) and to play against people.

The best way to describe my current style of game play is: "Wow, did I just get lucky!"

I am somewhere between a beginner and intermediate, and I am always interested in a new game. Please feel free to send a game request.

My ultimate goal is to get good enough to lose at competitions happy.png
