Tarrasch vs Max Kuerschner, 1889

Hello All,

I love the Guess the Next Moves type games, in particular the older games. Here is one from 1889 with Tarrasch vs Kuerschner. Par for this game is 44, my score was 45.

When I play these older games I usually look for a picture of one of the people playing. I picked Kuerschner and I was unable to find any pictures at all. I could find a lot of games played by Kuerschner and reviews made by modern players about Kuerschner's games, but not a single picture.

And here is where the Fates showed up to entertain me - I found a few of Kuerschner's games on books.google.com in an old monthly chess magazine called Checkmate: A Monthly Chess Chronicle. Inside the magazine you will everything we do now here on chess.com but in paper form using the older chess notations. Articles, responses, quizzes, letters and game reviews, it is all there.

For example here is a snippet from the Miscellaneous section of the chronicle:

Here on chess.com we can play "Vote" style chess vs a current Master. In the snippet above we have the Manhattan Chess Club vs the Havana Club which was played by cable (no, not modern cable, think telegraph). The game was 43 moves long and was completed in a single day.

OK, enough of my rambling about chess history! Here is the game, followed by my suggested moves.

This game is my favorite opening: Queen's Gambit Accepted

The first 3 moves are a given 1) d4, d5 2) c4, dxc4 3) e3, Bf5

4) My guess was correct with Bxc4

5) I received full credit for my suggest move of Nc3, the actual move was Qb3

6) Bad move suggestion on my part, Qxb7 which resulted in me losing a point. I forgot about the Bishop on e4. Actual move was f3

7) My suggested move of Ne2 was correct.

8) I suggested castling with received full credit (3 points), but the actual move was e4

9) My guess of Nbc3 was correct

10) My guess of d5 was correct. An interesting side note: when I ran this game through the analyzer the computer disliked the move of d5. The analyzer said a good move was Bg5, but an excellent move was O-O.

11) My guess of exd5 was correct

12) My guess of d6 was correct

13) My guess of Bxf7+ was correct

14) My guess of Bg5 was correct

15) I received full credit for my suggestion of Nd5, but the actual move was Ne4

16) Partial credit (2 points) for my suggestion of Rd1. The actual move was Bxf6

17) More partial credit for my suggested move of Rd1. The actual move was O-O-O

18) Lost a point for my move of Nc5. The actual move was Bf4

19) Partial credit (2 points) for my move of Ne6. The actual move was Qe6

20) Partial credit again for my suggestion of Rxd7. The actual move was Nxf6

21) My move of Nxd7 was correct

22) My suggestion of Rhe1 was correct

Enjoy!

Welcome to my quiet corner of Chess.com!

I have loved this game as a child but never had anyone who wanted to play. Playing against a computer is handy but it doesn't compare to the adrenaline rush of playing against another person.

I finally bit the bullet and joined this website to learn tactics (I need lots of help with) and to play against people.

The best way to describe my current style of game play is: "Wow, did I just get lucky!"

I am somewhere between a beginner and intermediate, and I am always interested in a new game. Please feel free to send a game request.

My ultimate goal is to get good enough to lose at competitions happy.png
