How to Enjoy Chess
I recently read two articles by GM Serper on the issue of "Chess Trolling", found here here and here.
The Bongcloud opening is disparaged, so I went and found some comments under this video.
"After realizing there's no possible winning move against the bongcloud, both players agreed to a draw."
"They can't talk to each other, but their moves are worth more than a thousand words, they communicate though battle and memes, reaching heart and soul. That day, the two kings came to a draw, completely stoned."
"With this, the bongcloud remains undefeated in official tournaments"
"I've seen them walk out on each other, cry over the board, get stressed and have all the serious faces. Seeing them laugh like this over the hottest chess opening right now is good for my heart."
"This video makes me so happy. Hikarus reaction the moment king moves to e2 is so genuine. He went from being serious, thinking of all the possible openings, then straight to dying of laughter the moment bongcloud was played. Then magnus, serious as well, probably ready to make sure the game moves for the draw, starts laughing when Hikaru plays the same opening. then they both started cracking up because they had mutually decided they’re going to make it a threefold draw. Man, what a great video, just pure genuine fun."
GM Serper suggests that Top Grandmasters are ambassadors for chess. Indeed they are. They have shown thousands of people, including myself and at least three of my closest friends, that chess is about having fun.
If you're gonna let anyone tell you how you should play chess, it should be the people who want you to have fun, not the people who want you to "see the true beauty of chess", whatever that means.
