1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 ...
All variants of the King's Pawn Opening start with the move e4.
The WQA works only if Black plays 1...e5 in response to 1.e4. Then White will move their Queen to h5 (Qh5) Attacking Black's Pawn on e5.
Black can respond with 4 moves:
Nc6 or d6 or Nf6 or g6
There are 2 good and 2 bad moves. Try to guess the good moves. Good moves - Nc6 and d6, bad moves - Nf6 and g6.
Page 2
Nc6 or d6 or Nf6 or g6
You know that the best moves here are - Nc6 and d6, but how white wil respond?
Nc6
After Nc6 white can respond with the move Bc4, threatening checkmate on f7 square. Also the move Bc4 is the best for white.
Now try the best defending move for black. ↓
The correct answer is g6, because now the "e-pawn" is defended. Black can play Qe7 too, but it's isn't the best move. Also black can play Qf6, but this move is bad for black and good for white. And the 4th defending move for black is Nh6, but it's a bad move too. If black has not made any of these four moves
white will checkmate black on f7. Now you can see the positions after this moves. ↓
2. ... Nc6 3. Bc4 g6
2. ... Nc6 3. Bc4 Qe7
Page 3
2. ... Nc6 3. Bc4 Qf6
2. ... Nc6 3. Bc4 Nh6
And how can white checkmate black's king if black has not made any of these four moves. For example black moved their knight to f6 (Nf6).
Page 4
D6
D6 is the 2nd good move in this position. After d6 white moves their Bishop to c4 (Bc4) threatening checkmate on f7, so the best move here is the same - "g6".
The d-pawn is ready to do all for her sister on e5.
After Bc4 black can make move Qe7, but it's better for white. One of the moves which defends black's king is Qd7, but it's better for white too. And one more defending move is Qf6. As you can see on previos page this move is better for white. Also black can respond with Knight to h6 (Nh6) = bad move for black. If black has not made any of these four moves white will checkmate black's king on f7. You can see the position down. ↓
2. ... d6 3. Bc4 g6
2. ... d6 3. Bc4 Qe7
2. ... d6 3. Bc4 Qd7
2. ... d6 3. Bc4 Qf6
2. ... d6 3. Bc4 Nh6
Page 5
Nf6
After this moves - 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5, the move 2. ... Nf6 won't be a big mistake. So after 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nf6 3. Qxe5+ there are 2 possible moves - Be7 or Qe7. Which move is better? Try to solve. ↓
Which is the best move for black after Qxe5+?
The correct answer is Be7, but why the move Qe7 is bad? Because after 4.Qxe7+ Bxe7 white can push their e-pawn to e5 and kick black's knight. The position after all trades and moves. ↓
3. ... Qe7
3. ... Be7
Page 6
G6
After 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5, g6 is worst move! This move blunders a fork. After 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 g6 the best move for white is Qxe5+ . ↓
Page 7
What comes after 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4 g6?
This variant after 2. Qh5 Nc6 is the best, after this comes Bc4 and g6 defending the f7 square, but what comes next? After kicking the queen with the "g-pawn" , the best move for white is to retreat with the Queen to f3 square, one more time threatening checkmate on f7.
The best defending move for black here is Nf6, blocking white's queen attack to f7. Now white's attack is blocked and the best option for white is to develop their pieces, so the best move for white is Ne2 - developing king's knight. After this black's position is good and they have only three normal moves and these moves are - Bg7, Na5 and d6. The best move here is Bg7, because on the next move black king can castle and their king will be on a safety place. Now white can castle, but here they has a better move and it's Nbc3 - developing white's 2nd Knight. Before castling black can make the move d6 - to make way for their white-squared bishop. Then white can castle or make the move d3 - to make way for their dark-squared bishop. Both moves are good so you can choose, but i think d3 is better. Black will castle. Which move is best for white - to castle or to go a3?
A3 is better because this move isn't allowing black's knight to go to b4. Best for black is Bishop to g4 (Bg4) kicking white queen from f3 square. Now the best move is to retreat to g3(Qg3), but white also have a move Qe3.
Page 8
Qg3 or Qe3?
Both moves are not bad, but Chess.com analysis says that after Qg3 the position will be + 0.26 for black and after Qe3 + 0.66 for black. So let me 1st tell you what comes after Qe3 and why this move isn't better than Qg3.
Qe3
Qe3 isn't the best move, because after this move black have a tricky move Nd4.
The worst move here will be to take the knight on d4 with white knight on e2, because after Nxd4 comes exd4 a fork to white's knight and queen.
And now? The pawn isn't defended!
But if white will take here comes the Brilliant sacrifice! Nxe4!! Black are attacking white queen with their bishop and the best move for white is to take on e4 (Qxe4), but then comes the great move Re8 pinning white queen to their king! Now you know why to take on d4 with the knight isn't a good idea.
After Nd4 white don't need to take black knight. They need to defend their king and queen from a fork on c2. Here white have 2 normal moves - Kd1 and Qd2. I'll tell you that Qd2 is better. Now you unerstand why the move Qe3 is bad. Because all black pieces are attacking when white's dark-squared bishop is inactive, queen is defending c2 square and the king isn't castled. Who don't understand, can see the position here.
Page 9
Qg3
As you know that the move Qg3 is better. Now let's see why! After Qg3 black has 2 good moves - Qd7 (Defending one more time their light-squared bishop on g5) and Be6 (Offering an exchange of pieces of equal value). Be6 is better. Now white have 2 good moves - Bxe6 or Bg5 (Pinning black knight to their queen). Bg5 is better because white are developing their bishop and pinning black's knight.
And now which move will choose black? H6 is kicking white bishop. And Nh5 offering an exchange of pieces of equal value.
The best move is Nh5 and after this white can take black queen with their bishop (Bxd8), black will take white queen on g3 (Nxg3), 12. hxg3 Raxd8, white can offer a draw and i think the best decision will be to accept the draw, because black have only + 0.30.
If h6 the best variant is to trade on f6 (11. Bxf6 Qxf6) and to castle O-O. Now on the board is middlegame!
