Art inspired by Chess
Chess was a great source of inspiration for many artists around the world in the middle ages. That's because at those times, the game was spread to Europe and to the Arab regions. Many art pieces have been created, ranging from poems to paintings. In this blog I am going to present to you nine of them. (Links for the artists below.)
1) Lady Howe mating

This painting is called "Lady Howe mating". It was created by Edward Harrison May in 1867 and it represends Benjamin Franklin being mated by Lady Howe. It is made with oil on canvas on masonite and the owner of this painitng is the Yale University.
2) Duke Albrecht V.of Bavaria and his wife Anna of Austria playing chess

This painting was made by Hans Muelich in 1552. It is beautiful with bright colours and many detail.
3)The Chess Players

Made by Honore Daumier in 1863.
5)The chess players

One of my personal favourites. It has the same name as the previous one but the artist is now Thomas Eakins and he created the painting in 1876.
6) The game of Chess

Created by Lucas van Leyden in 1508. It is painted with oil on oak wood and it is owned by Gemaldegalerie (Berlin).
8) The chess game

Made by Emile-Georges-Weiss.
9) The game of chess

Created by Arturo Ricci.
Except from paintings, chess also inspired people, to create poems such us Marco Girolamo Vida's poem: Scacchia ludus (1527).
I strongly believe that the procces of making chess pieces (handmade) is an art itself. It requares many time and talent.

This is the end of the blog. I hope you liked some of the paintings. I would like to mention that this is my first small blog and I might made some mistakes. Please tell your opinion (or correct me) at the comments.
