Scandinavian Defense

1.e4 d5 -
The Scandinavian Defense is one of the most direct ways to confront White's e4 pawn immediately.
After 1.e4 d5, if White captures with 2.exd5, Black often recaptures with the queen (2...Qxd5), although some lines use 2...Nf6 first (delaying the queen recapture).
By bringing the queen out early, Black risks giving White easy development with tempo (attacking the queen), but also gains central control and rapid piece development if played correctly.
Modern treatments of the Scandinavian often involve retreating the queen safely to a square like a5 after being attacked. -
Key concepts: Immediate central challenge, fast development, dynamic queen play.
