ROOK ENDGAME FUNDAMENTALS PRACTICE DRILLS;
  • Lucena Position - White needs to get the king out of the way so the pawn can promote. Use the famous "build a bridge" technique to claim victory
  • Reaching The Lucena Position 1 - First, cut off the black king. It is most important that you don't let your opponent's king in front of your pawn. Then you should be fine!
  • Reaching The Lucena Position 2 - The winning method here involves your king in front of the pawn. Apply what you know about the Lucena position.
  • Cutting Off Along The Rank - Sometimes you don't need to cut the black king off on the file. Cutting along the rank can be stronger!
  • Philidor Position - Cut off the king with your rook. If the pawn advances too far, run your rook to the opposite rank and give checks till you draw!
  • The Short Side - If you can get your king to the short side of the pawn and your rook to the long side, checks from the side may allow you to draw.
  • Promtoing The Rook Pawn 1 - Find the way to get your king out from in front of the pawn. Then use some clever tactics to avoid Black's mating threats.
  • Promoting The Rook Pawn 2 - Black wants to draw by shuffling the king between h7 and g7, but you can prevent that with clever pawn play. How?
  • The Vancura Position - Transfer your rook to attack the pawn from the side, and the draw will be easy.
  • The Frontal Attack 1 - The Black rook plans to check endlessly when your King emerges. How can you defeat this plan?
  • The Frontal Attack 2 - Here is another example of a defense that is trying to check us from the front. Use zugzwang to make progress.
  • The Frontal Attack 3 - Position your king and rook to harass the white king if it tries to advance. The White king should be stuck defending the pawn.
  • The Umbrella Method - Use the umbrella method to rptect your king from checks by the white rook and soon your pawn will promote.
  • Defending F & H Pawn - Where should your rook be, to best harass the white king? You will need the rook on the long side and the king one the short side.
  • Symmetrical Pawns - Prevent your opponent from achieving what they want in this basic rook ending. Start by improving your king!
  • An Extra Pawn - You need to use everything you have. Activate your rook and king and seek to pressure any other weakness that you can create.
  • Outside Passed Pawn - Active pieces are required here. What is black's drawing plan?
  • Rook Behind Passed Pawn - Try to learn from both sides of the board here. White can press, but Black has a strong drawing chances. Start by including your king.
  • Rook Beside Passed Pawn - Make steady progress with your king pawns, and you have chances. Consider castling queenside.
  • An Active Rook - Look to make simplifications to drawn endgames we have already covered, and keep your rook active.
  • Passed Pawns - Be careful not to let Black put their rook behind the b-pawn and start pushing it.
  • Four vs Three - Try to make a pawn, maneuver with the rook on all sides, and advance the kingside pawns to create weaknesses.
  • Minority Attack - Use a minority attack to saddle Black with a weakness on the queenside. The flight on the kingside.
  • Pawn Islands - Force the Black rook to defend weaknesses, and then open new flanks of attack and over whelm your opponent.
