The Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Gambit
The Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Gambit is a super aggressive opening gambit that sacrifices a knight, bishop, and a pawn to win a queen . This gambit starts out with 1.Nf3 d5. Then, 2.e4 dxe4 3.Ng5 Nf6
After that White plays d3 and Black responds with exd3.
White recaptures with Bxd3 and then Black plays h6.
White then plays Nxf7 and Black takes the Knight with Kxf7.
Next, White plays Bg6+ and Black responds with Kxg6.
White then captures Black’s queen withe Qxd8 to finish the gambit.
Be careful in this position! Black can trap your Queen. The key thing to do is to pull your Queen back and castle. How do they trap you? Black can play pawn to e4. If you are greedy and take the Bishop. Black can play Bb4+, attacking your Queen while checking your King.
What about capturing the c7 pawn? After Black responds with Nc6. You can’t move your Queen without getting captured. After castling Black can play Ne8 trapping your Queen. This is how you play the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Gambit and avoid trapping your own Queen.
Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Gambit from Scandinavian Defense
Do you want to counter the Scandinavian Defense? As you play your normal 1.e4 they play 1…d5, don’t bother to learn Scandinavian opening theory, instead learn how to play the IBMG in the Scandinavian. To set up the trap play 2.Nf3, baiting them to take your pawn. They will take the pawn or you can take the tempo. Then play Ng6, attacking their pawn. They will defend it with Nf6. Then, you will sacrifice another pawn by playing d3. If they don’t want to lose their e4 pawn they will take our d3 pawn.
