RIP Danya

I still can’t believe I’m writing this.

Daniel Naroditsky—Danya to so many of us—is gone. And the chess world feels quieter, dimmer, less alive without him. He wasn’t just a grandmaster. He was a teacher, a storyteller, a friend to thousands who never met him but felt like they knew him. I was one of them.

I remember watching his blitz streams late at night, listening to his calm voice break down chaos into clarity. He made chess feel like poetry. Not just because he played beautifully, but because he explained it with such care, such joy. He didn’t just teach us how to play better—he made us fall in love with the game all over again.

Danya had this rare gift: he could make you feel like you mattered. Whether you were a beginner or a titled player, he treated your questions with respect. He celebrated your wins, helped you learn from your losses, and always reminded you that chess was supposed to be fun. That it was supposed to be human.

His passing is a shock. It’s hard to process. He was only 29. There was so much more he could’ve done, so many more games to play, lessons to teach, lives to touch. But even in his short time, he left a legacy that will outlive all of us.

I’ll miss his bullet commentary, his dry humor, his brilliant rook lifts. I’ll miss the way he made me feel like I could be better—not just at chess, but as a person. I’ll miss the quiet wisdom he brought to a noisy world.

Rest in peace, Daniel. You were one of the greats. Not just on the board, but off it too.

Thank you for everything.
