Rook - The first piece

There different opinions about how someone can learn chess for the first time,

Once i used to teach pawns first but i realized that it is a little confuse for some young kids to go forward and take diagonal so i only teach first pawns if i follow the Mini Chess program (About minichess i will write in another oportunity).

Rook, no castle, goes forward, backward, left or right. Can move from one square to seven, i know there are 8 squares in the board but if it start in a1 and moves to a8 it is only seven squares. The only limit is to don't do two directions a time and if it met another piece. If the piece is the same colour, you need to stop one square before the crush. If the piece is the other colour, my pieces are white and yours black, a capture is allowed standing on the square where the opponent piece was and removing it from the game. You are not force to capture a piece it is your decition.

With my students i let them play along the board to check if they can travel around the columns and files.

You can check the chess.com lessons or the chesskid lessons too.

Congratulations for your first steps in chess.
