Some Fun Openings/Gambits To Try Out During Covid!

Hi, this is @Phantom_Beast23, and today, I'm going to be sharing some of my (4 to be specific) openings and traps you could definitely try out during Covid! These openings helped me gain a TON of rating which has finally helped me achieve 1200 blitz! These openings may not be as commonly played as others, but I would definitely recommend trying these openings out.

Note, you may have a difference in openings choices that could be considered as "unorthodox", so if you have any other openings, I strongly suggest you mention it down below so others and myself are able to seehappy.png.

Any ways, let's start!

1. The Hungarian Opening

Also knows as the King's Fianchetto opening, this opening and I have quite a connection, probably because I gained about 200 blitz points with it! I love this opening a lot since it can easily transpose into the the English, the QGD, The KIA (King's Indian Attack), etc.

Some things I like are that

- Its allows for castling quickly

- Like I said before, it can transpose into other, more famous openings such as the English and the Slav formation as black.

Things I don't like

- It can get VERY theoretical

Overall, its a very nice opening, and with the previous success I've had with it, I would give it an A-

A game I really liked with this opening was this nice game played by Pal Benko and Bobby Fischer:

This game was just pleasant game played by both sides where Fischer actually lost! The reason why Fischer resigned the game was because there was basically no way to stop all the passed pawns before promoting to a queen. A move I really like that was played by Benko was Ne4, an attempt to exchange the knights and after Queen takes back, White just had the positional advantage...a really nice find by Benkohappy.png

2. Blackmar Diemer Gambit

This is one of the more cooler gambits as unlike some of the other gambits such as the Tennison and the Englund's(note, I made blogs on both of these gambit so make sure to check them outtongue.png), it leads to a much more developed position and has many variations! The variation that I play is the one I showed as the example for this section! So if you want to play something else instead of the QG, I would strongly suggest checking out this gambit and seeing if it works for youwink.png

Some things I like about it

- It has many variations that you can play

- Leads to strong development

- It has a very good win-rate

Some things I dislike

- Can be easily refuted with the right set of moves

- Isn't common at the GM level

So overall, I would rate this opening a B+, and thought I can understand why a bunch of people may disagree with this, I haven't found TOO much success with it, unlike others, though since I know a LOT of people LOVE this opening, and it has a good win rate, I decided to give it a B+

Here's an interesting game that was played between Emil Joseph Diemer and NNhappy.png

Note, this gambit is very RARELY played at the GM level, though I have witnessed its popular at the 1900 or 1800 levels. It actually took me 15 minutes just to find a game that I considered was "cool".
This game was all about development, especially at the beginning which helped Diemer significantly and later win
There was also 13..Nxh7. This must have been a very stunning move for black but it's a nice move since slightly exposes the king...with that being said, the next move for white was 14..bxg6. This was a nice move as it exposes the king even more than before which helped Diemer get the dub. If you ' know, the reason black resigned was because of the 2 passed pawns, which ultimately led to black's defeat.

3. Sicilian Toilet Variation

Yeah, it's called the Sicilian Toilet Variation. At least the person who thought of the name actually had a sense of humor!
This isn't probably the most respectable, or the best opening, with the Dragon and the Najdorf being much better, but this isn't a horrible set up, as there isn't really nothing wrong with it. I would definitely see if it works for you, just for funtongue.png
Some things I like about it
  •  Its a not a horrible set-up
  • -One of the better "troll" openings
Some things I don't like it
  •  There's no advantage or gain when playing this
  •  Easily refutable
I would give this opening a C+ just because there's honestly nothing wrong with this opening, its an alright set-up, though if it was USCF rated or something I would definitely recommend the Accelerated Dragon or some thing. A B- wouldn't be a bad grade too, though I feel like a C+ is a good final grade for this opening.
Though it's not a bad game I would say 47..Nd7 was a mistake since it now allows for some Not-So-Pretty Rook Checks (see what I did there?) and is just horrible for white now. After some thinking, I decided that 45...Rd2 was a much safer/better move for white since it stops any rook checks.

4. The Bongclound!

This opening is so good, I don't think I even deserve to mention it. But oh well, I am anyways, it's just too amazing NOT to mention ithappy.png

The bongcloud is possibly the greatest opening EVER starting with these moves:

There are MANY variations as well: such as

Some things I like about it are

-Allows for King development

- It can allow your bishop to Fianchetto early

- Amazing in Blitz and bullet

- It was ranked in the top tier by Hikaru Nakamura and Levy Rozman

- And it counters the Sicilian and many other openings and gambits

Some things I don't like about it are

- There's honestly nothing bad with the opening

Here's a game where Hikaru CRUSHED Levon Aronian with the Bongcloud:

Obviously this was bullet so we weren't able to see the full powers of the Bongcloud at the professional level, but it still shows how much power the Bongcloud yields. It was obvious that even Levon Aronian couldn't refute this unrefutable opening!

Here's a nice video on YouTube where Magnus explains the BongCloud!

So, what grade would I give this opening? An A+++++! This opening refutes ANY gambits or traps and develops your king like a boss! You won't find many other unrefutable openings like the BongCloud!

So I hope you learned or gained some knowledge about these openings as they are very unorthodox or different that the other, more common openings! I would definitely recommend at least trying these openings or taking a look at them as while some of them haven't given much success, I know others have!

And as always, make sure to check my other Blogs, They're pretty good as I take my time and effort to do them! I also hope to get Top Blogger soon so your support would be much appreciated!

Thank you,
