Dice Shogi
Dice Shogi is perhaps the best chess variant with dice, of course, after Grand Dice Chess ![]()
To be honest, I could hardly imagine how one could play shogi with dice at all. It turns out you can.
Dice Shogi is a recently invented Shogi variant. It is essentially Mini Shogi played with dice determining the players' moves. But unlike well-known chess with dice, the process of playing here is strikingly different.
The rules are the same of Mini Shogi except the value of the die rolled at each turn is the index of the column of a piece must go.

This is very unusual and along with further rules makes the game completely unique and extremely entertaining.
Let's say you rolled one at the start of the game. You can then move either a pawn or a bishop. In any case, one of these pieces must end its move on the leftmost file.

Or you rolled three. You can move Gold, Silver or Bishop to column number 3.

When you have pieces on your hand, you can drop a piece you like on the column with the index equal to the value of the die. If there are no legal moves with the value of the die, or if the value of the die is equal to 6, you can move any piece according to the rules of Mini Shogi.
Moreover, if your king is in check, then in this case you can play any piece that will eliminate this check. You can play the king without exposing it to a new check.
The first player to checkmate the opponent's king wins.
