Knight or Bishop?
Hi guys welcome back to my blog this is my first thumb nail i have ever made so please comment below your thoughts on it. Today we will be talking on a debate that has been going on for a long time and that which is better the knight or the bishop. Well i think that each have there pros and cons.
Pros
Knight: 1. Can fork pieces
2. Good in the openings
3. Smother Mates
4. Used in a lot of openings
Cons
1. Not the best in endgames
2. Knights are short ranged pieces.
3. Knights can be easily threatened by pawns.
4. Two knights cannot check mate the king.
Bishop Pros:
1. Long range piece.
2. great in endgames ( especially stopping pawns).
3. Strong in opened position
Bishops: Cons
1. Can only control squares of one color
2. Not good in closed positions
3. Bishops can be blocked off by pawns.
4. Vulnerable to threats from knights.
This bishop is useless because it is blocked off by pawns:
Knights are very good in closed positions:
Bishops are good in opened position:
Closed and Opened positions:
In a opened position pieces have more central control and developed pieces. Here are some open positions are the Italian Game, Ruy Lopez, Fried Liver Attack. A closed position doesn't try to gain central control and typically uses the knights more. Bishop are not good in closed positions because they are blocked off by pawns. Knights are good in closed positions because they cant be blocked off because they can jump over pieces. Bishops are good in open positions because they can control diagonals, and bishops can multitask better then the Knights can.
Forks:
One great thing that Knights is that they can fork. There are many different kind of forks
. Fork :attacking two pieces at once typically with a Knight
. Royal fork : a royal fork is when you put the King in check with a Knight and attacking a rook or queen.
. Family fork : checking the king while attacking the queen and rook.
.You can fork pieces with pawns and bishops but it is much more easier to do it with a Knight.
Bishops and endgames
After the middle-game is the endgame in the endgame Knights are not that useful because they are short ranged pieces. The bishop on the other hand is a long ranged piece and can stop pawns from promoting. The bad thing about this is if your pawn promotes on a dark square adn your bishop is light squared it makes it hard to stop the promotion.
Conclusion:
The Knight and Bishop are both good pieces but i think that the Knight is slightly better. The Knights are good in closed and open positions. They cannot be blocked off because they can easily jump over pieces unlike bishops. Knights can also fork pieces which is gives a huge advantage later on. Bishops are good in endgames but they can only go on one color so they cant always stop promotions. Knights may be a short ranged piece but they are way better than bishops.
