Are Competive Chess Engines gonna be Something Big? New Bechmark?

Something that I have wondered is, are people going to be tuning in to see how chess playing algorithms and chess engines compete against one another? Also, is this going to be the next benchmark on performance? Besides game-play and database, are things like latency going to be in play when looking at what is the best chess engine out there?
